RVSRI Participates in Fifth Session of Working Group on Biological Weapons Convention

Geneva, Switzerland – The fifth session of the Working Group on the Strengthening of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) is scheduled to take place from December 2 to 13, 2024, at the United Nations Office in Geneva. This meeting aims to advance international cooperation and enhance the implementation of the BWC as state parties navigate the increasingly complex landscape of biological threats.

In a significant development, Razi Vaccine & Serum Research Institute of Iran, renowned for its impactful contributions to vaccine production and biotechnology, will actively participate in the discussions. The Institute is eager to share its expertise and experience in vaccine developments and biological research, playing a pivotal role in the dialogue aimed at strengthening global biosecurity standards.

The agenda for this year’s session encompasses several key topics, including Assistance, Response & Preparedness on December 2; Confidence-Building & Transparency on December 3; Compliance & Verification on December 4, 5, and 11; Organizational, Institutional & Financial Arrangements on December 6; International Cooperation & Assistance Mechanism on December 9; Science & Technology Review Mechanism on December 10; and Overall Consideration of all topics as outlined in paragraphs 8, 18, and 19 on December 12 and 13. Since its establishment in 1975, the BWC has been dedicated to preventing the use of biological and toxin weapons while promoting peaceful biological research for public health and safety. As biological threats continue to evolve, this session is vital for fostering international solidarity and developing effective strategies to mitigate these risks.

Experts and representatives from state parties are expected to engage in constructive dialogues to strengthen the BWC framework and ensure a coordinated global response to potential biological threats and incident.
