TEHRAN – On January 5, 2025, as Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute (RVSRI) marked its 100th anniversary, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations extended congratulations to the institute in recognition of its century-long excellence in veterinary science and research. In a video message, Dr. Thanawat Tiensin, Assistant Director General and Director of FAO’s Animal Production and Health Division commended RVSRI for its pivotal contributions to combating livestock diseases and enhancing animal health worldwide.

Dr. Tiensin highlighted the institute's critical role in addressing significant animal health challenges since its establishment in 1925, particularly its efforts during the Rinderpest outbreak in Iran, which ultimately contributed to the disease's global eradication in 2011, achieved through collaboration with FAO and the World Organisation for Animal Health.

RVSRI, throughout its history, has significantly expanded its research and production capabilities, emerging as a leader in scientific and technical cooperation. The institute has hosted numerous international and regional webinars and meetings, including a significant partnership with FAO and the European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease, focused on effective strategies for controlling FMD. This webinar addressed epidemic patterns and quality control methods for FMD in Iran and the Middle East, featuring esteemed scientists and participants from various countries and reinforcing the institute's leadership in managing animal diseases.

Moreover, RVSRI's active participation in global events underscores its dedication to advancing veterinary science. In September 2024, the institute proudly represented Iran at the FAO's Global Conference on Animal Health Innovation, Reference Centers, and Vaccines in Rome, demonstrating its contributions to sustainable livestock transformation.

In closing, Dr. Tiensin concluded his message with heartfelt congratulations to the institute: “I hope this proud legacy will continue to flourish, bringing forth new accomplishments and collaborations in the pursuit of animal health, food security, and sustainable development.”
